Bertha Apaza, a local resident, said the extreme heat was a clear sign of shifting climates that had now forced the city to ration water use. Bolivia has experienced some of the most extreme temperatures in August and September, which are usually temperate months. Many of those living in El Alto, a city of around one million people, come from farming communities raising livestock and planting vegetables to survive. Members of the scientific community warn the situation could become critical with the El Nino weather pattern set to arrive in December, potentially altering the forecast and turning up the temperature. El Nino can prompt extreme weather events from wildfires to cyclones and droughts in some areas and more rainfall in others.

EL ALTO, Bolivia, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Erick Callejas may be just 10 years old - and a lot shorter than the other participants on the soccer pitch - but he has no qualms enforcing the rules as one of the few referees his age. "On Saturdays and Sundays I go out to referee with my little colleague, my son, Erick," Ramiro said. Callejas refereed his first match in a women's league after his dad signed him up for the job. "My dream is to referee the Bolivian Derby, to be a FIFA referee so I can go to the World Cup, America Cup, Liberators Cup and the Champions League," Callejas said. Jan 28 (Reuters) - At least 24 people died in northern Peru after a bus carrying 60 passengers plunged off a cliff in early on Saturday, police told local media. The tragedy, involving a bus for the company Q'Orianka Tours Aguila Dorada, occurred in the district of El Alto in the far north of Peru, SUTRAN said. SUTRAN said early investigations showed the bus appeared to have an up-to-date safety inspection and accident insurance. Road accidents are relatively common in Peru, with many drivers operating vehicles on precarious roads and without proper training. In 2021, 29 people died when a bus plunged off a highway in the Andes mountains.

MEXICO CITY, Nov 10 (Reuters) - A shooting left nine dead and two wounded at a bar in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, which has increasingly suffered from cartel violence, local authorities said Thursday. Five men and four women were killed in the gunfire and two more women were hurt, the town said. The assailants had not yet been identified, officials said, adding that units of state and federal authorities as well as the National Guard would be moved into the area. Last month, 12 were killed at a bar in the city of Irapuato, following a nearby shooting that left 10 dead in September. Homicides have dropped slightly in 2022, though Lopez Obrador's term is on track to be the deadliest in modern history.
